What do you need for your Duke of Edinburgh Expedition
For all Expeditions
Everything you need for a smooth expedition—what to bring, what we provide, and exactly how to pack it so your bag feels lighter and stays dry. Download the printable checklist below and use the visual packing guide to get expedition-ready.
Essentials (Bring These)
Rucksack: 65–75 L with waterproof plastic liners/dry bags. This size fits DofE kit comfortably and allows correct weight distribution.
Sleeping bag: Rated 3/4-season for UK nights. Pack in a dry bag or compactor bag.
Walking boots: Broken-in, ankle-supporting, with grippy soles.
Waterproofs: Breathable jacket with hood + waterproof over-trousers.
Navigation: Map case, compass (group may share), whistle.
Headtorch + spare batteries.
Water bottles/hydration: 2–3 L total capacity.
Personal first aid: Blister care (Compeed/tape), pain relief you’re allowed to carry, any personal medication.
Emergency warm layer: Fleece/synthetic mid-layer in a dry bag.
Phone & power bank: For safety; keep off during hiking unless needed.
Gaffa tape & a few cable ties: Micro-repairs on the go.
Tip: Aim for a pack weight ≤ 25% of body weight (often 10–12 kg for most participants once water is on board).
Clothing (Wear + Pack)
Base layers: 2–3 moisture-wicking tops (no cotton).
Insulation: 1–2 warm mid-layers (fleece/micro-puff).
Hiking trousers/leggings: Quick-dry; avoid jeans.
Spare socks & underwear: 2–3 pairs of technical socks; pack one “sleep socks” pair.
Sun hat/beanie & gloves: Weather swings happen!
Camp shoes (optional): Light sliders or trail shoes to rest feet.
Food, Water and Cooking Kit
Water: 2–3 L carry capacity + purification tabs if needed.
Lunches & trail snacks: High-energy, low-bulk (wraps, oat bars, nuts, dried fruit).
Breakfasts & dinners: If self-catering, keep it simple (dehydrated meals, boil-in-the-bag, instant rice/noodles, couscous).
Mug, bowl, spork; small wash kit for utensils; light tea towel.
Allergies & dietary needs: Let us know in advance so assessors are aware.

Stove & fuel: Trangia or gas stove (follow group plan).
Lighter/matches in a waterproof bag.
Windshield (if not integrated).
Scourer & tiny washing-up liquid (decant).
Camping & Sleeping
Tent: Group tents typically shared (check your joining info).
Sleeping bag: 3/4-season (pack dry).
Sleeping mat: Foam or lightweight inflatable.
Rucksack liner system: Heavy-duty plastic liners + smaller dry bags for clothing/sleeping kit.
